Raw Goat Milk FAQs
What is raw goat milk?
Raw goat milk is simply goat milk that has not been pasteurized. After milking, our milk is filtered, cooled, and refrigerated. The majority of our milk is used to make our farmstead cheeses. By customer request, we also offer a limited number of raw milk pre-orders. Those orders are bottled before pasteurization and kept refrigerated until pickup. The remaining milk is pasteurized and used in our cheesemaking process.
What is pasteurization?
Pasteurization is the process of heating milk to a specific temperature for a set amount of time to reduce harmful bacteria and extend shelf life. After pasteurization, the milk is rapidly cooled and refrigerated until it is ready for use in our cheesemaking process.
Why does the label say “NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION”?
It is illegal to sell raw milk for human consumption in the state of North Carolina.
Our raw goat milk is registered with the North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services as a pet food product. State regulations require each container to be labeled “NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION.”
Is raw goat milk safe for pets?
Because it is illegal to sell raw milk for human consumption in the state of North Carolina, our raw goat milk is sold only as a registered pet food product.
We take great care in producing, cooling, and handling our milk.
We encourage customers to research the benefits and risks associated with raw milk and make informed decisions for their pets.
How should I store my milk?
Raw goat milk is a perishable product and should be kept refrigerated at all times.
For best quality, please bring a cooler or insulated bag when picking up your order, transport it home promptly, and refrigerate it immediately. Keep the milk cold and return it to the refrigerator after each use.
Why is prepayment required?
Our raw goat milk is bottled specifically to fulfill customer reservations. Once bottled, it cannot be returned to our cheesemaking process.
To reduce waste and ensure our limited supply is reserved for those who have ordered it, all raw milk orders must be prepaid. Orders that are not picked up at the selected market are non-refundable.
